Abstract. The opaque minerals in ten lava flows of the Keweenawan series of Michigan were studied microscopically by the writer. The basaltic lavas, which range in thickness from 100 to 1,400 feet, contain ilmenite, magnetite, hematite, intergrowths of magnetiteilmenite and ilmenitehematite, copper sulfides, native copper, and pyrite.
Get PriceMagnetite is easily recognized by its color, magnetism, and hardness (6). The mineral is infusible before the blowpipe. Its powder dissolves slowly in HC1, and the solution reacts for ferrous and ferric iron. Strongly magnetic; sometimes exhibits polarity and is therefore a natural magnet, known as lodestone. Get PriceMagnetite can be found in many areas of the world, including South America, Australia, the United States, Europe, and China. High concentrations of lodestone, the naturally magnetized version of magnetite, have been found in Tanzania and have been known to affect compass readings. Lodestone is usually found close to the surface of the earth.
Get PriceJan 14, 2019· Magnetite is a type of iron oxide with natural magnetic properties. In fact, it is the most magnetic naturally occurring mineral on Earth and was once used in compasses. Its chemical name is ferrousferric oxide, and its chemical formula is Fe 3 O 4.. This mineral occurs in nearly all igneous and metamorphic rocks, though usually only in small particles or in a solution with other minerals.
